Set in America’s South during the nineteenth century, this bold new musical is a sweeping story of love, conflict, and the search for understanding. Sung-through in the tradition of Hamilton, Les Misérables, and Rent, the score is a vibrant mix of gospel, rhythm and blues, pop, rock, opera, folk, and classic musical theatre.
At the centre is Rail, created and played by Todrick Hall, who falls deeply in love with Lily Rose, a young Black woman. His world collides with that of Scarlet, his owner, who herself is drawn to Richard, a wealthy neighbour from the community. As Rail is chosen to work alongside Richard and his brother, a bond emerges between the men. What begins in conflict grows into mutual respect, and ultimately into a dangerous, forbidden love that challenges everything they know.
As the story unfolds, friendships and romances cross boundaries of class, race, and convention. When Rail suffers a brutal attack, the characters are forced to confront the stark differences that divide them and the need for empathy that could bring them together.
This is not a story of blame, but one of compassion. Through soaring music and powerful drama, the show invites audiences to imagine life through another’s eyes. Its message is simple yet profound: we cannot choose the roles we are given in life, but we can choose how we play them.
