The 50th anniversary revival of David Hare’s rebel play.
Before the New York Dolls. Before Debbie Harry. Before Kurt Cobain. There was Maggie Frisby. Once the roaring voice of 60s counterculture, now broke and disillusioned, a band’s youthful dreams of anarchic rebellion collapse into bitterness. Amidst the wreckage, lead singer Maggie tears through the night fuelled by booze, fury, and a voice that refuses to die. 50 years after David Hare’s trailblazing play set the Royal Court alight, Teeth ’n‘ Smiles is ready to burn things down all over again.
The ship is sinking but the music remains the same. A play with original music starring Rebecca Lucy Taylor (Self Esteem) as Maggie.

First performed at the Royal Court in 1975 starring Helen Mirren, Teeth 'n' Smiles follows Maggie Frisby and her rock band, The Skins, during a chaotic performance at a Cambridge University May Ball at the end of the 1960s. Over the course of one explosive night, the play charts the collapse of youthful idealism as countercultural rebellion collides with privilege, class divisions, and commercial reality.
It’s known for its raw depiction of the death of 1960s idealism, sharp social satire aimed at elite institutions, a powerful, volatile central performance from Maggie and the fusion of theatre and live rock music.
